Steve was so nervous the night that he took me out to dinner, but we'd been dating less than a year, so I really didn't think much of it. He said that he had a big presentation the next day, and that he just wasn't ready for it. I believed him, and even asked him to practice his speech on me to ease his mind!
About midway through the speech he started talking about us and our life, he said the most wonderful things and then got down on one knee and asked for my hand in marriage.
I never thought someone could truly surprise me and catch me off my guard. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that someone could pull off a proposal without me knowing about it, but he did.
I sat there, wanting to shout 'YES!' but I froze. I looked at him, for what seemed like 20 minutes, without uttering a word. I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, but I just couldn't get the word out.
Through the crying and nervous shaking, I nodded my head and smiled -- and with that, he put the engagement ring on my finger. He got back up and sat in his seat, and we both just gazed at each other -- probably thinking the same thing: Did he? Did I just....YES! We had just gotten engaged. It was the most romantic night of my life, and it's an evening that I'll never forget.
